Gary’s 9/11 Memorial: A Day of Remembrance and Unity

September 11, 2024

Gary, IND. On this solemn day, the City of Gary gathered to honor the lives lost 23 years ago on September 11, 2001. Mayor Eddie Melton, Police Chief Derrick Canon, and Fire Chief Larry Tillman reflected on the resilience of our country in a time of adversity.

“We gather today on this solemn occasion to remember and honor the thousands of lives lost on September 11, 2001. Though more than two decades have passed since that tragic day, the pain and loss remain with us,” stated Mayor Melton. “Across the nation, families, friends, and communities continue to mourn the innocent victims whose lives were stolen. Today, we stand united with them, remembering the mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and children whose names are forever etched in our hearts.”

“We’ll never forget the resilience of a nation that refused to yield to fear. And we will never forget the importance of coming together like we’re doing today in the face of adversity because, in those moments, our true strengths are truly revealed,” Mayor Melton added.

Police Chief Derrick Canon emphasized the ongoing need for vigilance. “We will never forget 9/11. It is a constant reminder that our way of life is precious and we must protect it at all costs,” stated Chief Canon. “Look at what the past has taught us: We must remain vigilant, even at the local level because we have actors that want to do us harm.”

Fire Chief Larry Tillman shared a memory of the Gary Fire Department’s response in the aftermath of the attacks. “Members of the Gary Fire Department rushed to New York in the aftermath of the attacks using a van donated by a local rental car company,” stated Chief Tillman. “They too faced the unknown—driven by the same spirit of service that binds us all as public servants.”

As the City of Gary paused to remember, the event served as a powerful reminder of the resilience and unity that define us in the face of adversity.
