Lake Street ImpROVEMENT PROJECTS

Lake Street in Gary's Miller neighborhood is transforming for the future!

This year, as the final stages of construction are completed, residents can expect that the street will continue to be impacted by three improvement projects, some of which will require detours. Once complete, residents can expect to have a fully paved road, updated bridges, new sidewalks and a bike path along Lake Street, stretching from South Shore Miller Station all the way to Lake Street Beach.

Please see the list of projects below for more information about each project and its expected time of completion.

1. LAKE STREET / INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL PARK PAUL H. DOUGLAS CENTER PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

Contractor:
John Cecil
Construction Agency: Federal Highway Administration/ National Park Service
Expected End Date: Late July 2024

Notes: The old bridge, due to its poor condition and unsafe nature, has been demolished and is in the process of being replaced with a new bridge.

2. LAKE STREET SEWER REPLACEMENT & ROAD IMPROVEMENTS
(FROM 3rd AVE TO LAKE ST. BEACH)

Contractor: Grimmer
Construction Agency: Gary Sanitary District
Construction Engineer: American Structurepoint
Expected End Date: Late November 2024

Notes: This project establishes a separated sewer system by adding a dedicated storm sewer to mitigate sewer overflows. Project includes new sewer main, pavement, sidewalk, bike path, and streetlighting. Indiana American Water is replacing the water main and service lines for residential, commercial, and emergency use.

On or after Wednesday May 29th, 2024, Grimmer will be setting up a detour between Birch and Hemlock. Local traffic will still have access but the temporary road between Cypress and Hemlock will be extremely hard to pass through. Grimmer is asking that all buses and traffic not directly housed in the closure area use the detour route. The detour is to be in effect for 5 to 6weeks.

3. LAKE STREET ROAD BRIDGE
(BETWEEN FOREST AVENUE AND JUNIPER AVENUE, OVER CALUMET LAGOON)

Contractor: Gariup Construction Co
Construction Agency: County Construction
Engineer:  Robinson Engineering
Expected End Date: Early July 2024

Notes: Pedestrian Bridge removal and replacement. Decking and concrete barrier wall for the bridge is to be replaced with new added guardrail. This project accommodates the new trail pathway.
