Gary, IND - On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, Mayor Melton spoke at the Black Male Discussion at Indiana University Northwest. This discussion was one of many activities during Black Labor Week.
Black Labor Week is a movement founded by Gary native Ephrin Jenkins of USW Local 1014. This week-long event brings together the community and activists through various activities that address the needs of retirees, veterans, seniors, and individuals experiencing homelessness. It serves as both a resource hub and an educational platform highlighting the contributions of Black leaders to the labor movement and the broader community.
“It is only right to recognize, both locally and nationally, that Black workers have been at the heart of building America—from coal mines to steel mills, from railroads to auto plants. Despite being underpaid and overlooked, they have always stood up, fought back, and pushed forward,” stated Mayor Melton.
Black Labor Week has brought together individuals from different backgrounds to share knowledge, build solidarity, and advocate for change. Many participants appreciate the opportunity to hear diverse viewpoints during the discussions and witness the community’s collective effort. The program continues to grow reinforcing the importance of advocacy and the need for resources in underrepresented communities.
“I want to congratulate Ephrin Jenkins and his entire team for their dedication in making this entire week possible,” stated Mayor Melton. “Their hard work, vision, and dedication to labor justice have kept this tradition alive and growing and we could not be prouder to host you here in the city again.”
