GARY, IN – October 3, 2024 – The Gary Public Transportation Corporation (GPTC) and the City of Gary held a monumental press conference at the Adam Benjamin Metro Center to commemorate its 40th anniversary and announce the expansion of intercity bus services. Opened in 1984, the Metro Center continues to serve as an intermodal commuter hub for surface transportation throughout the Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana areas. This milestone also celebrated Greyhound's increased city presence, further encouraging and enhancing connectivity throughout Northwest Indiana.
Key speakers at the event included Rep. Frank Mrvan (D-IN), Eddie D. Melton, mayor of Gary, Kyle Allen, Lake County commissioner, Tai Adkins, president of the Gary Common Council, Fatih Eroglu, regional vice president of Greyhound and Denise Dillard, interim general manager of the Gary Public Transportation Corporation. Their remarks highlighted the critical role of accessible transportation in maintaining the Region's economic development and continuing to foster ongoing community engagement and growth.
Congressman Mrvan stated, “Thank you to Mayor Melton and all the leaders with the City of Gary, the Gary Public Transit Corporation and Greyhound for this collaborative initiative that improves the quality of life for everyone in our region. As we celebrate this initiative and the 40th Anniversary of the Adam J. Benjamin Metro Center, I look forward to the continued success of Gary to be a driving force that connects our region and provides more job-creation and economic opportunities throughout Northwest Indiana.”
Mayor Melton expressed, “This opportunity showcases Downtown Gary’s ability to provide a vibrant, connected transportation hub that can meet the diverse needs of travelers from Gary, Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland. The expansion of bus services at Gary Public Transportation Corporation is a pivotal part of my vision for redevelopment of Downtown Gary, which is supported by the establishment of the Transit Development District and Senate Bill 434. The initiative shows the City of Gary’s commitment to investing in infrastructure that supports long term economic growth.”
During the event, the City of Gary recognized the invaluable support of community members, advocates and riders who have championed surface transportation efforts. The collaboration with Greyhound will help improve surface transit throughout the Region, providing equitable and
affordable transportation solutions that meet the needs of all residents. The initiative reflects a dedication to building a more integrated transit system that supports local economic growth. Greyhound also shared their excitement about the expanded services and commitment to serving the greater Northwest Indiana community.
