Gary, Indiana – April 6, 2025
At approximately 10:58 a.m., the Gary Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 1354 Harrison Street. Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke and fire conditions in the basement of a single-family home.
Firefighters conducted both primary and secondary searches. While the primary search was clear, the secondary search led to the tragic discovery of a deceased 70-year-old male in a basement bedroom.
The fire began in the northeast corner of the basement and extended through the walls into the attic before being brought under control. The home sustained significant smoke, fire, and water damage.
Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones affected by this heartbreaking loss. Incidents like these are solemn reminders of how fast fire can spread and how critical early warning can be.
While the specific circumstances of this fire are still under investigation, the Gary Fire Department continues to emphasize the importance of working smoke detectors in the home. Though no safety measure can guarantee outcomes, early detection can provide critical time to react—and may improve the chances of survival.
In partnership with the American Red Cross, the Gary Fire Department offers a free smoke detector program for all residents. When you call, a team member will visit your home to assess your needs and install the smoke detectors where necessary.
